Walker Exhaust 54562 Ultra Import Converter - Non-CARB Compliant Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I bought an '02 Outback wagon wholesale with the dreaded P0420 code lit. I first tried to clean the cat with lemon juice (urban myth?) but no dice. I then installed two new O2 sensors because I figured even if that wasn't it, after 223,000 miles they were due, but that wasn't it either, so I conceded to the reality that the original equipment cat really was toast. I read lots of disparaging remarks online about aftermarket cats on Subaru's but with what Subaru was asking for a new one, an OEM cat was out of the question.
Amazon had the best price I could find on this Walker cat, mostly because of their free shipping. The original shipping estimate was almost two weeks out but it arrived in only 6 days. I was very surprised it was shipped without a box and with both ends open, but it still arrived in perfect condition. My one gripe is that UPS transferred it about 6 times and it seemed like every time they did it got another sticker. It took me about half an hour to peel and dissolve all the stickers off which was about 10 minutes more than the time it took to install it on the car.
The description didn't mention gaskets. They are NOT included. I used an AP brand gasket and donut the first time I pulled the stock cat but didn't like that front gasket. I highly recommend buying the genuine Subaru front gasket as I did when installing this new cat. The Subaru gasket has a nice crush ring and seals much better than the cheapo metal/asbestos aftermarket version.
This Walker cat is very well made. I fit perfectly and cured my P0420 code. Time will tell if the nay-sayers are right about its life expectancy. Heck, if it lasts half as long as OEM I'll still be ahead because it's only a third of the price.
