I bought this to use as a gasket flange between my center pipe and the pipe coming from my muffler at the rear of the car. The had a cat back system so one flange is a little larger than the muffler (stock muffler) flange. Because the cat back had been on for a couple of years a little surface rust built up on the bottom of the flange. I used a wire brush to clean it up but it wasn't perfect. This gasket material is solid compressed fiber with no metal core which made it like cutting a thin linoleum tile (it is although a bit stiffer). I clamped it in between two thin pieces of plywood and uses a 2 inch hole saw to make the center hole and then used plain scissors to trim the outside to the desired dimension. This gasket will give you a little leeway on your sealing surfaces but it is not soft. I wrenched down the bolts and ran it and it sealed well but the next day it formed a much better seal. As a side note I usually use a copper gasket spray just to try and fill in slight deviations but the two flanges were by no means perfect. I would recommend using this for most sealing surfaces. I have a metal exhaust manifold gasket but this would probably work well especially on older cast iron exhaust manifolds with some small imperfections as with metal gaskets you really need a good clean flange. So far it is pretty durable but the muffler connection is not really a high stress area.I don't have a caliper handy but I think the specks are on on the companies site. just from eyeball its a prob about 3/32 inch thick.
July 22, 2010 update. This gasket is still working great, I uploaded a picture so you can see the thickness compared to a penny.
