I bought this muffler and the tail pipe (Bosal) to replace my dead muffler on 1997 Toyota 4Runner. I thought I found a good product at a reasonable price. Genuine Toyota muffler was over $400. When I got the muffler and the tail pipe, I checked everything. It looked decent. Then I discovered that one of the welded screws to hold O2 sensor was loose. That was the first hint of poor quality control. But I was still in the happy zone. Then I found that one assembly, called damper, wasn't on the muffler. I had no idea about that. So I called Bosal to make sure that absence of that assembly won't affect anything. The customer rep didn't care about my concern at all. All he said was to return the muffler and buy a Toyota one and he wasn't friendly at all. That guy thought he was doing me a huge favor just by speaking to me. Mister, do you think muffler will get inside a box, tape the box and walk to the shipper by itself and then order a new one. Since I am going on a camping trip, I didn't have enough time to return and get a new one. Also, I thought may be newer mufflers just don't need that assembly.
I started on installing it on my 4Runner. I installed the muffler. Then I tried to attach the tail pipe (Bosal) by bolting it to the muffler. The pipe from the muffler was about 1/4 inch protruding from the flange. So the flange from the tail pipe didn't come close enough to bolt. I had to take the muffler off to cut that extra pipe. In this process, the loose screw to hold O2 sensor fell off!
I cut the extra pipe and reinstalled the muffler. I forced the O2 sensor screw back into it's hole. I am hoping it'll stay.
Then I realized that Bosal didn't send the nuts for the bolts which attaches muffler to the tail pipe. Unfortunately, I didn't have matching nuts in my junk box. I almost called it a day. Then I realized that one bar near the muffler had 4 bolts of same size. I removed 2 nuts and used those to attach tail pipe to the muffler. Finally, my project was over. I drove my 4Runner to work. I did notice my 4Runner is making lesser noise.
Bottom line - There is a reason Toyota charges premium. Their products are very high quality. Even if they don't make it, they make sure about the quality. Next time I'll be extremely cautious with any non-OEM parts.
