I had a vacuum leak on my 1996 BMW that caused a rough idle for the first 10-15 minutes. At first, I could barely detect it. Over the period of 2 years (yes I had the problem for 2 whole years!), the idle got progressively worse.
I replaced the O2 sensors (2 of the 4), the intake gaskets, the oil separator, the catalytic converters, the mass air-flow sensor, the temperature sending unit -- all to no avail.
After hooking up this detector and pumping smoke into the intake system for about 1 minute, smoke rolled out between the throttle body and the intake manifold and I knew I'd finally found the cause.
Twenty minute trip to the dealership for parts, another 30 minutes to replace the $10 gasket and the problem was finally solved!
This tool is very well made and should last a long time. It's simple to use. All you need is a source for compressed air. If you suspect a vacuum leak, this is the way to know for sure exactly where it is.
