(More customer reviews)Needed a new muffler for my 2000 Ford Explorer 5.0 liter, 4 door, awd. First choice was a Ford oem catback but the part is no longer available from Ford. (Unfortunate that this once great company has slipped so far.) Oem mufflers are made from a poor (409) grade of stainless steel. They generally last 8 to 10 years here in northern Ohio. Steel mufflers are good for one winter and aluminized steel mufflers are good for maybe 2 years. I wanted a stainless system so my choices were limited. I chose the Gibson 619690 performance muffler.
For this car there are 2 systems listed on the Gibson website. I needed the system with the 2 bolt flange to connect the driver side catalytic converter to the muffler and the passenger side connection is a slip fit (dual inlet). The other style uses a 3 bolt flange to connect both inlet pipes to the muffler. (check out the Gibson website...they have pictures...very nice).
Jacked car up... broke old flange bolts and cut clamp on the slip fit to get the muffler loose...had to cut old tailpipe in 2 places to get the old system out.
New muffler went in easily...needed to unbolt bottom of passenger side rear shock in order to get the tailpipe in...And it then went together fairly well.
2 issues I have with the system. The first 1 is that the tailpipe was rubbing on the right rear shock. I was able to bend the hangers enough to obtain some clearance. The other issue was that the new hanger that Gibson supplied that attaches to the rear of the muffler and is incorporated with the muffler to tailpipe clamp was too long and hung below the muffler by 1-1/2". It took some cutting, welding and bending in order to shorten this hanger so that it was usable.
Started it up...kind of noisy..but I expected that going in. A Ford oem muffler would have been better but alas...
Job would have been much harder without a cutting torch and a welding machine.
Well we will see how long it lasts. The quality looks ok so I am hopeful.
